Colombo

Overview
Colombo is the fastest international escape on this list — under two hours in the air from most South Indian cities, and the entry point to Sri Lanka's south-west coast, the country's most reliable dry-season beach run. Treat the city itself as a one-to-two-day base for colonial-era Fort walks and food, not the main event; the real draw is the coastal circuit south of it.
Best time to visit
December through March, when the south-west monsoon has fully cleared and the Galle–Mirissa–Unawatuna coast gets its long dry stretch. This is also peak season locally, so hotel prices along the coast run 20-30% higher than the rest of the year — book your stays before your flight, not after.
Things to do
- Walk Galle Face Green at sunset and eat from the food carts lining it
- Explore Fort Colombo's colonial architecture and the Dutch Hospital precinct
- Visit the Gangaramaya Temple and the old Pettah market for spices and textiles
- Day- or overnight-trip south to Galle Fort, then on to Mirissa for whale watching (blue whale season runs roughly November through April, overlapping this entire window)
Sample itinerary
- Day 1 — Land in Colombo, Fort walking tour, sunset at Galle Face Green

- Day 3 — Continue to Mirissa for a dawn whale-watching boat trip, afternoon on the beach
