Kutch
Overview
Kutch is a district shaped like nowhere else in India: the Great Rann, a vast seasonal salt marsh that dries into a blinding white desert every winter. For roughly four months a year, the state government turns a patch of it near the village of Dhordo into Rann Utsav — a full tent city with folk performances, craft markets, and desert safaris — but Kutch is worth the detour even outside festival dates, for its handicraft villages, Banni grassland wildlife, and the sheer strangeness of the white desert itself under a full moon.
Best time to visit
Rann Utsav runs roughly November through February, timed to the dry winter season — nights get genuinely cold (single digits Celsius), so pack for it. Full-moon nights during this window are the single best time to see the white desert, when the salt crust reflects moonlight and appears to glow. Avoid the monsoon and immediately after (July–September), when much of the Rann is underwater or unstable mud.
Things to do
- Walk onto the White Rann at sunset, from the viewing point near Dhordo — the crust extends to the horizon in every direction, and the colour shift from white to pink to grey at dusk is the reason most people make the trip.
- Stay a night in the Rann Utsav tent city if visiting during the festival — Swiss tents and traditional bhunga huts, with nightly folk music and dance performances (Kutchi Ghoomar, Sindhi songs) in the central arena.
- Visit the Banni grassland villages around Kutch for block-printing (Ajrakh), bandhani tie-dye, and mirror-work embroidery directly from the artisan families who make it — Bhujodi and the villages near Bhuj are the most accessible.
- See wild ass at the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary in the Little Rann, roughly a half-day trip from the main Rann Utsav site, for one of India's more overlooked wildlife drives.
- Explore Bhuj, the district headquarters, for the Aina Mahal palace and a genuinely good regional-Gujarati thali before or after the desert leg of the trip.
Sample itinerary
- Day 1 — Fly or drive into Bhuj, afternoon in the old city (Aina Mahal, local bazaar), drive to Dhordo by evening.
- Day 2 — Full day at Rann Utsav: craft market by day, White Rann at sunset, folk performances after dark.
- Day 3 — Morning visit to a Banni artisan village (Bhujodi for weaving, or a bandhani village), drive back to Bhuj for departure.
