Overview

Manali sits at the northern end of the Kullu Valley on the banks of the Beas river, and it works as two different destinations depending on the season you show up in. In summer and the shoulder months it's a backpacker and honeymoon staple β€” Old Manali's cafe lanes, the wooden Hadimba Temple set in a deodar grove dating back to 1553, and a launch point for treks into Parvati and Spiti. From December through February it flips into India's most accessible snow destination, when Solang Valley and the road toward the Atal Tunnel turn white and draw crowds who've never seen snow before. The valley's real engineering story is the Atal Tunnel itself β€” at 9.02km, the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet, which cut the old Rohtang Pass crossing to Lahaul from a several-hour, weather-dependent climb down to about ten minutes and kept the Lahaul side reachable for much of the year even after Rohtang itself closes for snow.

Best time to visit

Manali genuinely has three distinct seasons worth planning around, not one. March to June is the classic hill-station summer β€” pleasant days, cool nights, and the best window for trekking and paragliding before the monsoon closes trails. July to September is monsoon: landslides and road blocks on the Manali–Leh highway and around Kullu are common, so this is the season to skip if road travel is part of your plan. December to February is snow season, and it's worth being specific about timing here β€” the first proper, reliably ski-worthy snow at Solang Valley usually settles in by early-to-mid December, while January is generally the most consistent month for deep, settled snow across the valley. Rohtang Pass itself closes for the winter completely (don't plan around it being open), but the Atal Tunnel stays operational in most conditions, keeping day trips toward Sissu and Lahaul possible β€” though it does close temporarily after the heaviest snowfall, so treat any winter Lahaul day trip as weather-dependent, not guaranteed. The last week of December through New Year's is by far the most crowded and most expensive stretch of the year; if you can shift even a few days either side of that window, book well ahead if you can't.

Things to do

  • Spend a morning at Solang Valley for snow activities in winter β€” tubing, short ski runs with an instructor, and cable car rides over the slope. First-timers should stick to the resort-run beginner slopes rather than hiring gear and heading off on their own; conditions change fast and the marked runs are genuinely the safer option.
  • Walk the Old Manali lanes on the far side of the river, a slower, cafe-and-guesthouse stretch that's a different pace entirely from the main bazaar β€” go in the late afternoon when the light through the apple orchards is best.
  • Visit Hadimba Temple in its deodar grove, a pagoda-style wooden shrine that predates most of what's built around it β€” early morning keeps it free of the tour-bus crowds that build by mid-morning.
  • Drive through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, if conditions allow, for a short, dramatic day trip into the drier, starker Lahaul landscape on the other side β€” check the tunnel's open/closed status the morning of, since heavy fresh snowfall shuts it without much notice.
  • Walk along the Beas river in Old Manali or near Van Vihar, a low-key way to spend an hour that doesn't need a booking or a guide β€” the river runs fast and cold year-round, so keep a real distance from the banks rather than climbing down to the water's edge.
