Munnar

Overview

Munnar is a hill station in Kerala's Idukki district, built around the confluence of three mountain streams (Mudra, Nallathanni, and Kundala — the name means "three rivers") at roughly 1,600m elevation, ringed by rolling tea estates that once made it the summer retreat of British planters. The Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Company still runs much of the tea business here, and the carpet of manicured tea bushes covering the hillsides is almost entirely human-planted, not a natural landscape — the original shola forest and grassland was cleared for tea starting in the 1870s. What natural high-altitude grassland does survive, mostly inside Eravikulam National Park just outside town, is the last stronghold of the endangered Nilgiri tahr, a mountain goat found nowhere else in the world in any real numbers. Munnar sits close enough to Tamil Nadu's Theni district that a clear-day view from Top Station looks straight down into the neighbouring state.

Best time to visit

September through March is the broad window, but the sweet spot is December through February — the post-monsoon landscape is still vivid green, the air is dry and cool (daytime temperatures in the pleasant high-teens to low-20s°C, nights dropping to 5-10°C), and skies are clear enough for the long views from Top Station and Doddabetta-style viewpoints to actually deliver. This is also Munnar's busiest and most expensive stretch: Christmas and New Year draw a heavy domestic crowd, hotel rates commonly spike 50-80% over off-season, and the Ghat Road up from Adimali backs up badly on peak weekends, so book well ahead and drive up early morning if you can. Eravikulam National Park closes every year from 1 February to 31 March for the Nilgiri tahr's calving season — if seeing the tahr up close is a priority, a January visit is the safer bet over a February one. April through May is warmer but still comfortable and less crowded; avoid June through August, when monsoon rain and mist can close roads and cut visibility to nothing.

Things to do

• Spot Nilgiri tahr at Eravikulam National Park, where a short paved trail from the entrance leads to grassland where the tahr are genuinely used to people and often visible without a long trek — go early to beat both the crowds and the closure window (park shuts 1 February–31 March annually; confirm current-year dates before you plan around it).
• Walk a working tea estate and stop at a tea museum — the Tata Tea Museum near town runs you through plucking-to-packing with tastings at the end, a straightforward way to understand what's actually growing on every hillside you've been driving past.
• Drive up to Top Station for the Western Ghats view, about 32km from town at close to 1,700m — on a clear December-January morning you can see across into Tamil Nadu's Theni valley; go early, since cloud cover tends to roll in by mid-morning even in the dry season.
• Picnic and boat at Mattupetty Dam, a 1940s-era dam and reservoir about 13km out with pedal- and speed-boating on the water — pair it with the nearby echo point if you're making a half-day of it.
• Take the jeep track up to Kolukkumalai, one of the highest tea estates in the world at around 2,400m — the road is steep and rough enough that only 4x4 jeeps run it, and a pre-dawn departure rewards you with a sunrise over the tea rows before the crowds arrive.

3. Day 3 — Pre-dawn jeep ride up to Kolukkumalai for sunrise over the tea estate, rest of the day at leisure back in town.
4. Day 4 — Morning at Top Station for the Western Ghats view, afternoon at Mattupetty Dam before departure.
