Kohima

Overview

Kohima is Nagaland's capital, a hill town best known outside the region for the World War II battle fought there in 1944 — but for travellers, its biggest draw is timing: every December, the Hornbill Festival gathers all sixteen of Nagaland's major tribes at the Kisama Heritage Village just outside the city, each with its own morung (tribal hut), dress, music, and food stall. It's the single best window to see Naga tribal culture concentrated in one place, and it remains genuinely under-visited compared to festivals of similar scale elsewhere in India.

Best time to visit

The Hornbill Festival runs the first ten days of December (1st–10th) every year, and it's the reason to plan a trip around this specific window — outside those dates, Kisama village is quiet and most of the cultural programming isn't running. December through February more broadly is Nagaland's dry, cool season and the most comfortable time to travel in the hills generally.

Things to do

• Spend at least two full days at Kisama Heritage Village — each tribe's morung hosts its own performances, textiles, and food through the day; trying to see all sixteen in one visit is unrealistic, so pick a handful and go deep rather than skimming everyone.
• Watch the Hornbill Night Rock Festival, held on select evenings during the festival — Nagaland has a genuinely strong home-grown rock and metal scene, and this is one of the more unexpected pairings with tribal culture on the same festival grounds.
• Try the food stalls without skipping the strong stuff — smoked pork with bamboo shoot, Naga king chilli preparations (among the hottest chillies in the world — pace yourself), and rice beer brewed by different tribes with distinct local recipes.
• Visit the Kohima War Cemetery in town, a quiet, immaculately kept memorial to the 1944 Battle of Kohima — a strong counterpoint to the festival's noise, and worth an hour on a non-festival day.
• Buy directly from tribal stalls — shawls, woodwork, and beadwork sold at Kisama are typically made by the seller's own tribe, not resold handicraft-market stock.

1. Day 1 — Arrive in Kohima, Kohima War Cemetery and town in the afternoon, early evening at Kisama for an orientation walk.
2. Day 2 — Full day at Kisama: morung visits, food stalls, afternoon cultural performances.
3. Day 3 — Second full day at Kisama focusing on tribes not covered Day 2, evening Hornbill Night Rock Festival if dates align.
