Amritsar
Overview
Amritsar is Punjab's spiritual and historical centre, built around the Sri Harmandir Sahib — the Golden Temple, whose gold-plated sanctum sits in the middle of the Amrit Sarovar (the "pool of nectar" the city takes its name from) and which runs the world's largest free community kitchen, feeding over 100,000 people a day regardless of religion, caste, or nationality. Just a few minutes' walk away, Jallianwala Bagh holds a heavier, harder history — the walled garden where British troops fired on an unarmed crowd in 1919, an event that hardened India's independence movement. Amritsar sits close enough to the Pakistan border that the daily flag-lowering ceremony at Wagah/Attari is itself a major draw, and the city's food — butter-heavy kulchas, tandoori everything, lassi thick enough to stand a spoon in — has a claim to being the most distinct regional cuisine in north India.
Best time to visit
October through March is the season that actually works. Punjab summers (April–June) are brutally hot, regularly crossing 40°C by midday, which makes daytime sightseeing at Jallianwala Bagh or the Wagah Border genuinely unpleasant — if you must travel then, restrict yourself to early morning and evening, and treat midday as indoor time. The monsoon (July–September) cools things down but brings high humidity and sudden downpours. Winter (December–January) is the most comfortable stretch — crisp mornings, cold nights (temperatures can drop close to freezing), and clear skies that make the Golden Temple's evening illumination and reflection especially striking. November and February–March (autumn and early spring) offer nearly as pleasant weather with fewer winter-peak crowds, so they're a good compromise if you want to avoid the December–January holiday rush at the temple and border.
Things to do
- See the Golden Temple at Amrit Vela (4–6am), before the day's crowds build — the sarovar is at its calmest and the reflection of the gilded sanctum on the water is the classic shot everyone's after. Cover your head (scarves are provided free at the entrance) and go barefoot through the marble causeway.
- Eat a meal in the langar hall, sitting cross-legged in a long communal row alongside pilgrims of every background — it's less a tourist activity than a direct way to understand what the Golden Temple actually is. Meals run around the clock; go once, then help with the dishwashing line if you want to see the operation from the inside.
- Walk Jallianwala Bagh slowly, reading the bullet-mark plaques on the walls and the well where people jumped to escape the firing — budget more time than you'd expect for a small garden; it's not a quick photo stop.
- Get to the Wagah Border by early afternoon for the Beating Retreat ceremony (around 4:15pm in winter, 5:15pm in summer) — arrive at least an hour ahead, since seating is first-come-first-served and it fills fast. Expect no mobile signal near the border itself.
- Eat your way down Kulcha Land and the old-city food lanes — try an amritsari kulcha stuffed with spiced potato or paneer, a plate of chole, and a glass of lassi from one of the old-city stalls that's been at it for decades.
