Independent panchang calculations (drikpanchang and prokerala both converge on the same date) put Maha Shivratri 2027 on Saturday, March 6, with the Chaturdashi tithi running from midday March 6 through early afternoon March 7. Treat this as a reliable astronomical calculation rather than an official announcement — the Mahakaleshwar temple administration typically confirms its own Shivratri programme and any special darshan arrangements only closer to the date — and recheck nearer your travel dates before finalizing bookings.

What changes at Mahakaleshwar on this one day

On an ordinary day, Bhasma Aarti happens once, before dawn, to a capped number of booked visitors. On Maha Shivratri, the temple has recently run a very different programme: in 2026, Mahakaleshwar offered continuous darshan for roughly 44 hours spanning the day before and through the night of Shivratri itself, with water offered to the lingam throughout, and moved the day's Bhasma Aarti to the afternoon instead of its usual early-morning slot — a shift the temple describes as happening only once a year, specifically for this festival. Priests conduct additional abhishek and special puja in the sanctum, offer panchamrit (a mix of milk, curd, ghee, sugar, and fruit juice), and dress the deity in elaborate "groom's attire," including a turban, for what's read as Mahakal's own Shivratri wedding observance. Crowd estimates for 2026 ran past a million devotees through the festival window, with the heaviest crush typically between 9pm and 1am — expect the exact programme to be reconfirmed by the temple each year, but expect it to be a night-long event, not a dawn ritual you can time narrowly around.

Getting anywhere near the Bhasma Aarti

Regular Bhasma Aarti booking runs through the temple's official portal (shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in), with registration, an uploaded ID, and online payment for a limited number of daily seats. On Maha Shivratri, treat that system as effectively full the moment slots open, and confirm current-year Shivratri-specific booking rules directly with the official site rather than third-party agents — special-day arrangements (capacity, whether general online booking even applies given the extended darshan format) have changed year to year. If you don't secure a slot, plan to join the general darshan queue instead and budget hours, not minutes, for it; local crowd-management arrangements (barricading, one-way pilgrim corridors) are typically announced only a few days ahead by the district administration.

Practical planning

• Book accommodation months out, not weeks. Ujjain's hotel capacity is nowhere near Varanasi's or Haridwar's, and Shivratri weekend fills every category of room in the city and in Indore (roughly an hour away) as overflow.
• Arrive at least a day early. Road access into the old city tightens as pilgrim numbers build, and you want a buffer day to sort logistics before the festival itself rather than arriving into the peak crush.
• Dress for a cold March night and a long wait. Even with the season shifting toward summer, pre-dawn and late-night temperatures can still be sharp — carry a layer, water, and comfortable closed shoes for standing in queues.
• Keep valuables minimal. Dense, slow-moving crowds are the main practical risk on the night itself, more than anything about the temple ritual — leave unnecessary cash and jewelry at your accommodation.
