Agumbe

Overview

Agumbe, in Shimoga (Shivamogga) district, is known as the "Cherrapunji of South India" for receiving some of the heaviest rainfall in Karnataka — it's a monsoon destination first, built around dense rainforest, waterfalls, and King Cobra habitat rather than tea or coffee estates. The Kalinga Centre for Rainforest Ecology, founded by herpetologist Romulus Whitaker, runs King Cobra research and rescue work in the area and occasionally hosts visitors — check ahead rather than just showing up. Several waterfall trails around Agumbe (Barkana, Onake Abbi) require a local guide, both for navigation and because routes can be genuinely dangerous in heavy monsoon flow.

Best time to visit

June through September, monsoon season, is when Agumbe actually earns its reputation — waterfalls at full flow and rainforest at its most dramatic, though trekking is riskier and best done with a local guide. October through February is drier and easier for waterfall treks with less risk, at the cost of some of the monsoon atmosphere. It's genuinely one of the wettest places in the state, so pack for rain regardless of season.

Trek to Barkana Falls, one of Karnataka's tallest waterfalls, with a local guide.
Trek to Onake Abbi Falls, a shorter, steep trek through dense forest.
Visit the Kalinga Centre for Rainforest Ecology if a visit can be arranged ahead of time, for King Cobra research and conservation work.
Walk the rainforest trails around town with a local guide for a chance at Malabar pit vipers, flying lizards, and the region's dense birdlife.
