• Coffee and estate tourism keeps expanding. Chikmagalur and Coorg both have well-developed plantation-stay and guided-walk options now; it's worth building a half-day around an estate visit rather than treating it as incidental.
• Wildlife access needs advance booking. BR Hills' K Gudi safaris go through the Karnataka Forest Department or the wilderness camp, not a walk-up gate, and Dubare Elephant Camp near Coorg is bookable through Karnataka State Tourism — plan these before you arrive rather than on the day.
• Agumbe's waterfall treks (Barkana, Onake Abbi) are guide-required, both for navigation and because monsoon flow makes some routes genuinely hazardous without local knowledge.

Picking a station by what you're after

For a classic misty-hills-and-coffee trip, Coorg or Chikmagalur are the safest bets and the easiest to plan a long weekend around. For a fast sunrise fix from Bengaluru, nothing beats Nandi Hills — it barely needs an overnight stay. For monsoon rainforest and waterfalls at their most dramatic, Agumbe is the one Karnataka hill destination actually built for the rains rather than despite them. For a hills trip built around wildlife rather than scenery, BR Hills is the outlier worth the extra planning.
