Coorg

Overview
Coorg (Kodagu district), centred on the town of Madikeri, is Karnataka's best-known hill region — misty coffee estates, spice plantations, and a Kodava culture distinct from the rest of the state. It's also one of the easier Karnataka hill trips to combine with wildlife: the Dubare Elephant Camp on the Kaveri river runs guided elephant interactions and bathing sessions, bookable through Karnataka State Tourism, and the Tibetan settlement at Bylakuppe (Namdroling Monastery, the "Golden Temple") makes a genuinely worthwhile half-day detour that many first-time visitors skip. Coffee-estate homestays now dominate Coorg's accommodation, often booked out well ahead for December–January.
Best time to visit
October through March is the classic window — cool, clear, and coffee blossom season falls right at the start of it after the first pre-monsoon showers (roughly March–April, weather-dependent). Monsoon (June– September) turns Coorg intensely green and the waterfalls run full, but several trekking trails close for safety and leech activity is heavy — go if you want the scenery and don't mind the trade-offs, skip it if you're planning an active outdoor trip.
Things to do
- Visit Abbey Falls, a short walk from a car park through a coffee and spice estate, fullest just after monsoon.
- Watch sunset from Raja's Seat in Madikeri town, Coorg's most visited single viewpoint.
- Spend a morning at Dubare Elephant Camp, feeding and bathing camp elephants on the Kaveri riverbank.
- Walk a coffee estate for the plantation scenery Coorg is known for — many homestays run their own guided walks.
- Detour to Bylakuppe's Namdroling Monastery, a large Tibetan settlement and monastery around an hour from Madikeri.
- Trek or drive to Talakaveri, the symbolic source of the Kaveri river, high in the Brahmagiri hills.
