Chikmagalur

Overview
Chikmagalur, in the Baba Budangiri range of the Western Ghats, is Karnataka's coffee capital and the base for Mullayanagiri — the highest peak in Karnataka at roughly 1,930m. It's grown fast as a resort and estate-stay destination over the last decade, and traffic on the Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri roads now backs up on weekend mornings in peak season, so an early start matters more than it used to. Coffee tourism is well developed here — plantation stays with guided tours are easier to find in Chikmagalur than almost anywhere else in South India.
Best time to visit
October through March is coolest and clearest, best for the Mullayanagiri summit views. Monsoon (June–September) is dramatically green with full waterfalls but heavy fog on the peaks and slippery trekking trails — treat it as a scenery trip, not a trekking one. Summer (April–May) is warmer but still pleasant compared to the plains.
Things to do
- Drive or trek to Mullayanagiri summit, Karnataka's highest point, best done early morning before cloud sets in.
- Visit Baba Budangiri, a Sufi shrine and pilgrimage site with wide Western Ghats views on the way.
- See Hebbe Falls, reached by a short jeep ride through a coffee and cardamom estate.
- Walk a coffee estate, with plantation-stay tours widely available around town.
- Trek Kemmangundi's viewpoints as a day trip, roughly 55km away, if you have a spare day.
