Nandi Hills

Overview
Nandi Hills, about 60km north of Bengaluru, is less a hill station to stay in and more a sunrise day trip — Bengaluru's most popular one. The hilltop has an entry gate with fixed opening hours timed around sunrise, and on weekends the road and gate can queue up well before opening, so arriving early matters more here than at any of Karnataka's other hill spots. It's also become one of South India's best-known early-morning cycling routes, with a steady stream of cyclists from Bengaluru climbing the ghat road before the general vehicle crowd arrives.
Best time to visit
October through February for the clearest sunrise views and coolest cycling weather. It's a viable day trip year-round, but summer (March–May) afternoons get hazy, and the site is at its best in the first couple of hours after gate opening regardless of season, before cloud or haze builds up.
Things to do
- Watch sunrise from the hilltop, the main reason most visitors make the trip — arrive before or right at gate opening.
- Walk to Tipu's Drop, a sheer cliff viewpoint with a grim history as a site of execution under Tipu Sultan.
- Explore Tipu's Summer Palace ruins and the old fort walls on the hilltop.
- Cycle the ghat road from the base, a well-established early- morning route for Bengaluru's cycling groups.
- Visit Bhoga Nandeeswara Temple at the base of the hill, a Chola-Ganga era temple worth combining with the hilltop visit.
