Top 5 Weekend Getaways From Bangalore (Under 200 km)
Bangalore's problem isn't a shortage of weekend options within 200 km โ it's too many, most of them repeating the same "hill viewpoint plus resort buffet" formula. The five below are picked to actually differ from each other: a sunrise point close enough for a half-day trip, a heritage palace city, a waterfall with a boat ride built in, a wildlife-focused hill range, and a quiet Andhra hill station most Bangalore travellers haven't already been to twice.
Where to go
- Nandi Hills, 60 km โ the closest on this list and the default sunrise trip; get there by 5am to beat both the crowd and the gate queue. Full destination guide linked below.
- Mysore, 145 km โ Mysore Palace, lit up on Sunday evenings and during Dasara, is the anchor, but don't skip Chamundi Hill's 1,000-step climb (or the road up, if you'd rather skip the steps) for the view back over the city.
- Hogenakkal Falls, 146 km โ the coracle ride out onto the Kaveri's spray is the actual point of coming here, not just the viewpoint; coracles run only when water levels and safety conditions allow, so it's a better post-monsoon-to-winter trip than a peak-monsoon one.
- BR Hills, 180 km โ Biligiriranga Hills sits inside a tiger reserve buffer zone, so this is the pick if you want a safari-style jeep drive and a real chance of wildlife sightings alongside the viewpoints. Full destination guide linked below.
- Horsley Hills, 155 km (Andhra Pradesh) โ the quietest of the five, with none of Nandi Hills' weekend crowding; it's a genuine hill-station climate rather than a viewpoint bolted onto a plains town. Full destination guide linked below.
Planning the drive
Nandi Hills and Mysore are both straightforward highway runs (NH-44) with good road surface the whole way. Hogenakkal and BR Hills involve a final stretch of narrower state highway, so budget extra time rather than extrapolating from Google Maps' best-case estimate. BR Hills' access road through the tiger reserve buffer has restricted timings โ check the forest department's current entry hours before you commit to a same-day return, since being on the wrong side of a closed gate at dusk isn't a minor inconvenience.
Best time to go
October through February is the comfortable window across all five โ clear air, cooler evenings at altitude in BR Hills and Horsley Hills. Hogenakkal is the exception: the falls are most dramatic just after the monsoon (September-October), while the coracle rides themselves are safer once the water drops from full monsoon flow. Peak summer (April-May) still works for Nandi Hills or Mysore if you go early morning, but skip BR Hills and Horsley Hills unless you enjoy dry, dusty forest trails.
