Coonoor

Overview

Coonoor is the second-largest hill station in the Nilgiris, about 20km below Ooty on the same toy-train line, and increasingly positioned as the "quiet Nilgiris" — smaller crowds, more working tea estates than resorts, and viewpoints that stay uncrowded even in peak season. A growing number of tea-estate homestays around Coonoor now run short tea-plucking and processing experiences for guests, which is worth building a half-day around if you're staying more than one night.

Best time to visit

April through June for the coolest, clearest weather, and September through November for a quieter post-monsoon window with good visibility on the viewpoints. Like the rest of the Nilgiris, avoid July–August when monsoon rain raises landslide risk on the ghat roads.

Things to do

• Walk Sim's Park, a terraced botanical garden that's smaller and far less crowded than Ooty's.
• Drive to Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose for tea-estate and valley views — best done together since they're on the same road.
• See Catherine Falls, a two-tier waterfall a short drive from town, fullest just after monsoon.
• Visit a working tea estate for a plucking-and-processing walkthrough, several now offer this as a standalone half-day activity.
• Trek to Droog Fort, a short, moderate hike to a ruined Tipu Sultan-era fort with wide Nilgiris views.

Weekend (2 Days)

1. Day 1 — Arrive, Sim's Park, tea estate visit and tasting in the afternoon.
2. Day 2 — Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose in the morning, Catherine Falls before heading back.

Extended Nilgiris Loop (3 Days)

1. Day 1 — Arrive, Sim's Park, tea estate walkthrough.
2. Day 2 — Lamb's Rock, Dolphin's Nose, Catherine Falls.
3. Day 3 — Droog Fort trek in the morning, toy train up to Ooty for the afternoon before departure.
