Tamil Nadu's Hill Stations: A Season-by-Season Guide
Tamil Nadu's hill stations aren't one trip — they're six genuinely different ones, and picking the right one matters more than picking the right dates. The Nilgiris (Ooty, Coonoor) are the classic toy-train, tea-estate circuit and the most crowded in peak season. Kodaikanal is quieter and more lake-and-viewpoint focused. Yercaud and Yelagiri are lower-altitude, shorter drives from the plains, better for a fast weekend than a scenic multi-day trip. Valparai is the outlier: a working plantation town inside a tiger reserve buffer, built around wildlife sightings rather than viewpoints.
What's changed recently
A few practical things are worth knowing before you plan around any of these:
- Forest and gate timings matter more than they used to. Valparai's Top Slip road through the Anamalai Tiger Reserve buffer closes to general traffic overnight, and Kodaikanal's Berijam Lake caps the number of vehicles allowed in per day via same-day forest permits. Neither is a formality — plan arrival times around them.
- Some classic viewpoints are now fenced or closed. Kodaikanal's Devil's Kitchen (Guna Caves) is closed to public entry after repeated fatal falls, and Pillar Rocks/Green Valley are fenced overlooks now, not open cliff edges. Older blog posts and guidebooks describing these as walk-in spots are out of date.
- Estate-stay tourism is growing across the board. Tea-plucking experiences around Coonoor and coffee-estate tours around Yercaud have both expanded in recent years — worth building a half-day around if you're staying more than one night anywhere in the Shevaroys or Nilgiris.
- Single-use plastic is banned in the Nilgiris district, covering Ooty and Coonoor — carry a reusable bottle rather than expecting to buy plastic-bottled water near the main sights.
Picking a station by trip length
A single weekend favours Yelagiri or Yercaud — both are short drives from Chennai or Bengaluru and don't need a full day just to arrive. A long weekend fits Ooty, Coonoor, or Kodaikanal comfortably, with enough time for the toy train or a lake-and-viewpoint circuit. Valparai is worth a dedicated three-day trip built around dawn and dusk drives for wildlife, rather than a quick stopover — sightings depend on repeated passes along the estate roads, not a single drive-through.
