Kodaikanal

Overview
Kodaikanal, in Dindigul district, is known as the "Princess of Hill Stations" — built around a star-shaped, man-made lake dug in 1863, with misty viewpoints, pine and eucalyptus groves, and a cooler, less commercialised feel than Ooty. Two access points matter for planning: the Kodai–Madurai/Periyakulam ghat road and the Kodai–Palani road, both of which the Tamil Nadu highways department can close on short notice during heavy monsoon landslides — check road status before driving up in July–September. Devil's Kitchen (Guna Caves) has been officially closed to public entry for years after a string of fatal falls; it's viewable only from a fenced platform now, not a walk-in spot, despite what older travel write-ups suggest.
Best time to visit
April through June is peak season — cool days, clear views, and the town's busiest stretch. September and October bring a quieter, post-monsoon shoulder season with good visibility. Winter (December– January) is cold enough for warm layers. Once roughly every twelve years, the slopes around Kodaikanal turn purple with Kurinji flowers (last bloom 2018); it's not an annual event, so don't plan a trip around it without checking current flowering years first.
Things to do
- Cycle or boat around Kodai Lake, still the easiest half-day anchor for the whole trip.
- Walk Coaker's Walk early morning for the best chance of clear valley views before cloud rolls in.
- See Pillar Rocks and the Green Valley viewpoint — both fenced overlooks now, for safety, rather than open cliff edges.
- Visit Bryant Park, a compact botanical garden right by the lake.
- Drive or trek out to Vattakanal and Dolphin's Nose, a quieter viewpoint popular with the backpacker crowd staying in Vattakanal's guesthouses.
- Get a same-day forest permit for Berijam Lake — only a limited number of vehicles are allowed in per day, and the permit is issued at the forest office in town on a first-come basis, so go early.
