Ooty

Overview

Ooty (Udhagamandalam) is the Nilgiris' district headquarters and Tamil Nadu's best-known hill station — a former British summer capital built around a lake, botanical gardens, and terraced tea estates at just over 2,200m. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the metre-gauge toy train that climbs from Mettupalayam through Coonoor to Ooty, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (part of the Mountain Railways of India inscription) and remains the single best reason to arrive by rail rather than road. The Nilgiris district has also enforced a single-use plastic ban for some years now — carry a reusable bottle, since vendors won't sell bottled water in plastic near the lake and botanical garden.

Best time to visit

April through June, timed to the Ooty Summer Festival (flower show, dog show, boat race), is peak season and also peak traffic — the Ghat Road from Mettupalayam or Coonoor backs up badly on weekends, so drive up early morning if you can. September through November brings clearer, less crowded post-monsoon greenery. December is genuinely cold with occasional frost on the botanical garden lawns. Avoid July–August: heavy monsoon rain raises landslide risk on the ghat roads.

Things to do

  • Ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway — book the Mettupalayam–Ooty toy train well ahead in season, or do the shorter Ooty–Coonoor leg if the full run is sold out.
  • Walk the Government Botanical Garden and Rose Garden, both at their best during the April–June flower show window.
  • Climb Doddabetta Peak, the highest point in the Nilgiris, for the telescope house views over the tea estates on a clear morning.
  • Boat on Ooty Lake, a man-made lake from the 1820s that's still the town's social centre in the evenings.
  • Visit a tea estate and factory near town for a tasting — several now run short guided tours through the plucking-to-packing process.
