Yelagiri

Tamil Nadu, India

Overview

Yelagiri is a small, low-key hill station in Tirupattur district (carved out of Vellore) at around 1,150m โ€” the shortest hill-station drive from both Chennai and Bengaluru, up a 20-hairpin-bend ghat road, which has made it a fast-growing weekend option rather than a destination in its own right. It's also become Tamil Nadu Tourism's hub for paragliding: an annual paragliding festival is held here, and tandem flights run through the season off Vellimalai hill, making it one of the few hill stations in the state built as much around an activity as around scenery.

Best time to visit

November through February is coolest and most comfortable. Paragliding season runs roughly November through June, weather permitting โ€” check locally on the day, since flights are grounded in high wind or rain. Being lower and drier than the Nilgiris or Kodaikanal, Yelagiri is a reasonable monsoon fallback if those routes are closed for landslides, though it's a quieter, less scenic trip than either.

Things to do

  • Paraglide off Vellimalai, tandem flights with local operators are the single biggest draw here.
  • Boat on Punganur Lake, the town's centre and easiest anchor activity.
  • Walk the Nature Park and Rose Garden, a compact, easy stop.
  • See Jalagamparai Falls, a short drive out, fullest just after monsoon.
  • Trek to Swamimalai peak for valley views without the crowds of the bigger hill stations.
