Yercaud

Overview

Yercaud sits in the Shevaroy Hills above Salem, at a lower altitude (around 1,500m) than the Nilgiris hill stations, which makes its climate milder and its crowds noticeably thinner. It's built around coffee and orange estates rather than tea, and its easy reach from Salem — and from Chennai and Bengaluru as a shorter drive than Ooty or Kodaikanal — has made it a growing budget-friendly weekend option rather than a multi-day Nilgiris-style trip. Coffee-estate stays and tours have expanded here in recent years, similar to the tea-estate homestay trend around Coonoor.

Best time to visit

October through June is comfortable overall, thanks to the lower altitude. The Yercaud Summer Festival runs in May, with a boat race and flower show around Yercaud Lake. August–September brings the monsoon, which is when the waterfalls run fullest but the ghat road gets slippery, so drive it with care rather than avoiding the season outright.

Things to do

• Boat on Yercaud Lake, the town's central point and easiest half-day activity.
• Visit a coffee estate for a tour and tasting — this is Yercaud's version of the Nilgiris' tea-estate visits.
• See Killiyur Falls, seasonal and best just after monsoon rain.
• Walk up to Pagoda Point and Lady's Seat, the two main viewpoints over the plains below.
• Explore Bear's Cave, a short, easy detour near Killiyur.
